Eating fish

Seasonal seafood

If you enjoy eating fresh fish, but are unsure about how seasonality affects their sustainability, the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) has produced this handy guide to the best choices for those fresh, wild caught fish that the Marine Conservation Society rates at 1, 2, or 3.

Avoid buying fish during their breeding or spawning times, the ‘red’ months, and below the size at which they mature. Buy fish during the ‘green’ months shown on the guide - these months are outside the breeding season and the best time to enjoy eating them.

Fish translations

While the species names (in Latin) remain the same around the world, common names for fish vary. Even within the same country, one kind of fish can have many common names!
