Consumer Information
King mackerel are iron-grey on the back and silvery on their sides and belly. They have pale to dusky fins. Their large size, appealing taste, and strong fighting ability make them a target for both commercial and recreational fishermen. The largest of the mackerels, they may reach a length of 1.8 m/ 5-6 feet and weigh 45kgs/100 pounds. King mackerel may contain methyl mercury in excess of the US Food and Drug Administrative (FDA) recommended limits and the advice is for women and young children not to eat shark, swordfish, King mackerel or tile fish. Summary
King Mackerel comes from a well managed fishery. Based on the 2008 stock assessment the South Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico stocks are considered healthy and not overfished. Avoid eating juvenile fish, particularly those that may be under the minimum landing size of 60cm.
