Summary
Hoki is distributed throughout the southwest Pacific. The trawl fishery for hoki is New Zealand's largest fishery by tonnage landed. The main catching areas are off the west coast of New Zealand's South Island, Cook Straight and the Chatham Rise to the east of the South Island. There are 2 stocks, an eastern and a western stock. Both stocks are improving and are estimated to be above management targets. The hoki fishery is associated with bycatch of seabirds, fur seals and other marine mammals.
