Consumer Information
The Hake family comprise 13 species, and although closely related to cod, they have a quite different long, slender body. Only the European hake, is found in waters close to the UK, and so Cape Hake may be less commonly available. It is also therefore likely to be a frozen product, rather than fresh. In general, Hake have a mild flavour with a medium but firm textured meat. Good poached with lemon juice.
Summary
Management is comprehensive but only partially effective. The stock status of M. capensis is good, but as the stock cannot be managed separately to M. paradoxus, for which the relative stock status is less certain, there is a significant mangement issue. Management for the mitigation of seabird bycatch is comprehensive but compliance is only good for night setting. Eat with caution.
