Fish of the Month

Fish of the Month

What’s the problem?

Why is it so urgent that the fish we buy to eat or cook be sourced sustainably? What do we mean when we talk about sustainably sourced fish?

We are taking fish out of the sea, in some fisheries, faster than they can be replenished.  Also it is not just about how many fish we are catching or how they are farmed but how we are catching them and when.  Overfishing and poorly managed aquaculture threatens marine wildlife and habitats. Fish consumption has reached an all time global high, with the sector producing a record 128 million ton of fish for human consumption.

MCS believes consumers have a key role to play in safeguarding the future of our fisheries, seas and marine wildlife by making environmentally sustainable and responsible choices when buying fish and shellfish – avoiding those that are under pressure in favour of those from healthy well-managed stocks, caught using the most selective methods available, or farmed to high environmental and sustainability standards.
